The Best Areas in Bali for Retirees, Ranked (2026)

Sanur is Bali's best area for retirees in 2026, scoring 22 of 25 on our five criteria: healthcare access, walkability, community, calm and value. Candidasa, Nusa Dua, Lovina and Ubud follow, each strong in places. Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu rank lowest for retirees, though each suits other buyers well.

How did we score each area?

Each area gets 1 to 5 on five criteria that dominate real retiree decisions, for a maximum of 25. The criteria: healthcare access (distance to a major international-standard hospital), walkability (flat terrain, pavements, car-free routes), community (established residents in your age bracket), calm (noise, traffic, nightlife spillover) and value (what your budget buys, per July 2026 listings).

Two honest caveats. First, weightings are personal: a fit 60-year-old surfer will weight these differently from a 75-year-old with a heart condition. Second, scores describe the area for retirees specifically, not overall. Canggu scoring 8 does not make Canggu bad, as our Sanur vs Canggu comparison makes clear.

Why does Sanur rank number one?

Sanur is the only area in Bali that scores 4 or 5 on four of the five criteria. It combines a major hospital eight minutes away, a flat car-free 7 km promenade, Bali's most established older expat community, and genuine town life without nightlife noise.

The receipts. Bali International Hospital opened in Sanur on 25 June 2025, inaugurated by President Prabowo, inside KEK Sanur, Indonesia's first health special economic zone: 41.26 hectares with around USD 620 million in projected investment under Government Regulation 41 of 2022. The promenade gives retirees the single thing most of Bali lacks, daily exercise without a scooter. Value is Sanur's weakest score at 3, because demand from people reading pages like this one has priced it above the north and east: freehold villas near the beach run roughly USD 300,000 to 800,000, leasehold entries from about USD 175,000, per July 2026 listings. What are the runners-up actually like?

Candidasa, Nusa Dua, Lovina and Ubud each beat Sanur on at least one criterion. None matches it across all five, and the gaps are usually medical.

Candidasa (17/25). East Bali's quiet coastal strip is what Sanur was thirty years ago: calm sea, low prices, a small but real expat community. The verdict is fair but firm: wonderful if you are healthy and self-sufficient, but the drive to a major Denpasar-area hospital is an hour or more, which becomes the whole story after one bad night.

Nusa Dua (16/25). The gated ITDC resort enclave is immaculate, silent and close to BIMC. It loses points because almost nobody lives there permanently: community is thin and daily life needs a car. A strong choice for a holiday base, weaker for year-round retirement.

Lovina (16/25). The north coast delivers Bali's gentlest pace and best value, with black-sand beaches and dolphin boats at dawn. The honest verdict: healthcare scores 1 because Singaraja's facilities are limited and Denpasar is two to three hours over the mountains. Best for younger, healthier retirees on tighter budgets.

Ubud (15/25). The cultural capital has a genuinely engaged expat community, cooler evenings and good value inland. It concedes points on hills, broken pavements, centre-of-town traffic and, again, distance from a major hospital. Lovely for a chapter; harder at 78 than at 62.

Why do Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu rank lowest for retirees?

Because they were shaped by and for a different customer. All three are successful areas whose strengths, nightlife, beach clubs and surf, sit on the wrong side of the retiree ledger.

Uluwatu and the Bukit (11/25) offer Bali's most dramatic coastline, but clifftop living means steep terrain, car-dependent distances and water trucked in by tanker in parts. Fine for surf-loving early retirees; hard work later. Seminyak (10/25) has restaurants retirees genuinely enjoy and reasonable hospital access towards Kuta, where Siloam Hospital Bali holds JCI accreditation, but noise and congestion score it 1 on calm. Canggu (8/25) is the island's growth star for digital nomads, and its shortcut-road traffic, construction and party economy are exactly what most retirees are leaving behind. What did the ranking deliberately leave out?

Three things, and knowing them keeps the table honest. First, smaller districts: Jimbaran, Umalas, Amed, Sidemen and Pererenan all have retiree residents, but their expat populations are too thin to score community fairly, so we folded them into their nearest ranked neighbour. Second, rental yield: this is a where-to-live ranking, not a where-to-invest one, and mixing the two produces bad answers to both questions.

Third, and most important, the weighting is flat: each criterion counts equally. Many readers should re-weight. If you manage a chronic condition, double the healthcare score and the gap between Sanur and everywhere except Nusa Dua widens further. If budget is the binding constraint, double value and Lovina and Candidasa climb past Nusa Dua immediately. The table is a starting grid, not a finish line, and the right way to use it is to rebuild the totals around your own health, budget and tolerance for distance before shortlisting anywhere.

How should you choose between them?

Start from healthcare and honesty about your ten-year-older self, not from where you enjoyed a holiday. Bali's foreign population keeps growing, with BPS Bali recording 6.9 million foreign arrivals in 2025, up 9.7% on 2024, and roughly 1.63 million Australians, so the established retiree areas will only get more established.

A practical filter: if you want walkable town life plus a hospital, that shortlist is one area long, Sanur.
