The four state-owned banks, Mandiri, BNI, BRI and BTN, are the ones foreign residents deal with most, partly because they are the only banks that can hold the IDR 2 billion deposit for the E33 Second Home Visa or the USD 50,000 deposit for the E33E Silver Hair Visa. All have branches with English-capable staff in the Denpasar and Sanur area.

Opening a local account generally requires a stay permit (KITAS or KITAP), your passport and a local address, and it makes daily life cheaper: local transfers are instant and card acceptance is wide. How do you get around without a scooter?

Easily, which is rare in Bali. Sanur is flat, compact and stitched together by the 7 km car-free beach promenade, and the ride-hailing apps Grab and Gojek plus Bluebird metered taxis cover everything beyond walking distance, in English, with fares set by the app.

Most retired residents settle into a simple pattern: walk or cycle the promenade and the main streets by day, app-hail a car for the supermarket run or an evening out, and keep the number of a regular private driver for airport transfers and day trips.
